0 in cloudTraditional box scores blindly grant a plus to whoever is physically on the ice when the red light flashes. But raw tracking can miss the player who actually engineered the offence.
The Left-Behind Playmaker
Imagine a defenseman who executes a perfect breakout pass, escapes a heavy forecheck, and drives the transition play through the neutral zone. Exhausted from the effort, they immediately step off the ice for a tactical line change. Three seconds later, their fresh replacement steps onto the ice, just as their forwards bury the puck.
How to Input This in the Game Tracker
Do not just default to the five players who happen to be celebrating on the ice. Look back at the sequence: reward the engine of the play. If a player did the heavy lifting to tilt the ice and create the scoring chance right before changing, manually award them the On-Ice Plus in your dashboard to capture their true offensive impact.
A simple minus is one of the most deceptive stats in hockey. It can treat a player who fought through a grueling 60-second shift exactly the same as a fresh player who just stepped over the boards into a disaster zone.
The Lazy Change vs. The Blind Jump
Imagine a winger who stays out far too long, turns the puck over at the opposing blue line, and takes a slow, lazy route to the bench. Because of that slow change, the opposing team launches a blistering odd-man rush. A forward leaps off the bench to replace them, skates hard into the zone, but is behind the play on the back check, and is instantly scored on.
How to Input This in the Game Tracker
Protect your defensive data from ghost minuses. When logging a goal against, do not punish the player who just jumped on the ice and had zero chance to stop the play. Use your judgment to tag the actual On-Ice group that caused the breakdown, especially the tired skater who created the odd-man rush with a bad change.
